Syd and Pia NYC’s “modus operandi” has always been fueled by the desire to grow as an artist. Born in a small ranch in the Dominican Republic, the designer began her quest as a designer at the age of 9, when her family migrated to New York City. As a toddler, she began sewing clothes for her dolls, sparking her interest to attend the High School of Art and Design. Consequently, she continued her studies at Parsons New York and left New York to explore Amsterdam, which, as she has described was one of her “earliest sources of inspiration.” She returned home to New York, completing her studies at FIT, which led her to admiration for metal work. She advanced within the world of accessories, and has had the opportunity to work for several of the top design firms in New York. Naturally, her work history includes Liz Claiborne, Selena Collections, Haskell Jewels, Joan Rivers Worldwide, and Roman/Sunstone. Her freelance history includes, Donna Karan Home Furnishing, Dana Buchman, Tusk LTD, Kate Spade, and Noir Jewelry.
Syd and Pia NYC was conceived due to the designer’s devotion to the accessories work, and the overwhelming request from family and friends for custom pieces. Simply put, her archival and recent custom made pieces have a natural raw metal aesthetic, with a timeless New York edge. The inspiration for her brand derives from her hometown, Brooklyn, NY and naturally, her two beautiful daughters, Sydney and Saffia – both names combined to create the company name. Their fresh young take on the world, are what makes the two girls, the designer’s very own “walking billboards.”
Syd and Pia NYC has been featured at Henri Bendel in New York, and Flock Gift, a specialty boutique in Austin, TX. The brand has had the pleasure of being featured in several publications, including Vogue IT, Elle Vietnam, Raine Magazine, El Diario NY, WOR Radio 710 AM, Joan Hamburg’s Bridal Show, and the Dominican newspaper, El Caribe.
